3 Firefighting Industry Resources to Bookmark Now

Let’s face it: There’s a lot that goes into understanding the firefighting industry. So the fact of the matter is, every good resource you can get your hands on is a fantastic thing to help solidify your knowledge and understanding.

In a previous blog we gave you three great resources we use with regard to fire hoses, firefighting and fire hose products. Today, we’ve got three more we want to point out to help you on a regular basis.

Check them out and feel free to send us some more we can keep an eye on.

1) Situational Matters Awareness

This fantastic website was founded by Dr. Richard Gasaway from St. Paul, Minn. Dr. Gasaway is an educator, author, podcaster and scientist who seeks to help people understand human factors with regard to fire safety, help them make better decisions and improve situational awareness.

This website is a gold mine of information. He has monthly newsletters, Q&As, podcasts, blogs, an on-line academy and much, much more. He also offers great thoughts and insights on social media.

2) Fire Hose Friction Loss Calculator

This is a pretty simple but helpful tool when trying to calculate friction loss in your fire hoses. Friction loss happens when water passes through a fire hose. As water passes through a hose, the friction between the water and the inside surface of the hose causes turbulence, which reduces the PSI (energy produced by the pump). This online calculator asks you to enter the hose diameter, the gallons per minute and the length of the fire hose, then calculates the friction you’re losing.

It’s certainly a handy tool.

The calculator itself is part of an online directory, FireDepartment.net, which also includes other sections for firefighting tools and fire department locations.

3) Fire Engineering

This website is an excellent resource for both the firefighting industry and for the general public. This website offers tons of information on everything from training to safety to buyer’s guides to newsletters, webcasts and blogs. It’s a very thorough website with more information than you could imagine.

Having a variety of great resources at your fingertips is a huge help in any industry, especially one as diverse and evolving as the firefighting industry. Whether it’s understanding the tools of the trade, prevention, training or fighting, these resources will go a long way in helping you on a daily basis.
